Mi Pueblo: Carrollton

In 2019, I was the Center for Diversity and Inclusion Resident Scholar at the University of West Georgia, where I received a grant to work on a project that will give the Carrollton Hispanic community a voice through storytelling while educating the local community.
Living in Carrollton, Georgia, I realized that there was a sizable Hispanic community, but they weren’t present in community events. I wanted to know why, so I reached out to the community to find out why. I interviewed six Hispanic community members to learn about their experiences living in Carrollton. The result was very positive. They all loved living in Carrollton.
To tell their stories I created a series of posters with quotes from the interviews. I also created a zine that featured messages to the community from each participant. Ultimately, I wanted to show all the work at an exhibit in the local library, but unfortunately due to construction and later the pandemic, that didn’t happen.
I am in the process now of finalizing a website where I will feature their clips from their interviews. I’m also working on a book where people will be able to read the complete interviews.
